Interview With The Toy Dolls
by Steve DIY

Well is there any need to introduce the Toy Dolls? Nah not really their track records speaks for itself and over the years they´ve left me with some fond memories after hearing various releases and catching them live once. I feel honoured to interview one of the bands I grew up listening to from my early teens. Here´s what the one and only Olga had to say.

Punk Globe: First off is this really going to be the end of The Toy Dolls as a band?

Olga: Yeah, well, probably, maybe? It could be! I think so!

Punk Globe: How’s the sales gone for the album and DVD? Have you had a lot of great response?

Olga: We have had a great response! I am really flattered that fans are still out there, and that they have stayed so loyal after such a long wait! I dont know any actual sales figures yet, but the record company seem very happy and we have talked to many people who have bought the DVD and album, they seem happy too!

Punk Globe: I believe you have a digipak of your last album available can you explain what one of them is for the technophobes amongst us?

Olga: A digipack means special packaging, different from the original, sometimes with photos or a booklet. usually its for die hard fans. I havent actually got a copy of the digipack yet! Have you!?

Punk Globe: I noticed you put a lot of work into your live show judging by the behind the scenes footage so how long does it take to prepare for a tour?

Olga: Thank you for noticing, it takes a long time! usually for a tour, which will include new movements, songs etc, it will take 3 or 4 months rehearsals, 3 days a week on average. What takes longer is the preperation and thing of ideas for the set, usually a year or more!

Punk Globe: Now this is where I have you racking your brains now – What’s the best album and single you’ve released in your opinion?

Olga: The best ever album is ABSURD-DITTIES, I am really proud of it, the songs and production are very nice! Single...oh, I am not sure, the b side of nellie the elephant is nice! Fisticuffs in Frederick street.

Punk Globe: One thing I’ve always wanted to ask you how come you always miss the UK when touring? Is it because of lack of venues and audiences where everywhere else it seems to be banging?

Olga: lack of audience is one thing! The main thing is we want to be really good before we play UK again, we played in 1993, then we were really good, if we can be as good as that again, then I will consider it! Providing we can get at least a cup of coffee from a UK promoter!

Punk Globe: You’ve been to a fair amount of countries with the Toy Dolls and The Dickies so which one do you like going back to and why?

Olga: I love all countries for different reasons!I wouldnt like to say which is my favourite!

Punk Globe: I heard a little rumour that you’re a chef? Is this what you do for a living when the band isn’t up to much?

Olga: Ha ha, thats what it is, a rumour! I have never been a chef! Inbetween tours I am writing or doing small acting parts for TV.

Punk Globe: You’ve had huge chart success in this country with the likes of Nellie The Elephant so if given the opportunity to go that way again would you go for it or are you more happier with the cult following you have?

Olga: I dont mind having chart success with a product I am proud of, but I think I am far happier with way things are, with a great cult following.

Punk Globe: Being a Toy Doll must be a great experience but how hell do you get through so many band members?

Olga: People grow tired of touring, they get sick of being stuck in the van! They also grow up and get married and have kids etc. Not me though!

Punk Globe: Over the years what has inspired you to write the lyrics you do and where do you get all your ideas from?

Olga: Ideas usually come from next door neighbours, shop keepers, girlfriends, soap operas and just about anything!

Punk Globe: So over the years you must have some funny stories to tell so can you share one or two for our readers please?

Olga: Yeah, we have stories, many! But what happens on the road, stays on the road!

Punk Globe: Any new bands you played with you’d like to plug?

Olga: Yes, CRASHED OUT, fantastic new band, I just played a guitar solo for them last night on thier new album. They have some great songs, Lee is an amazing guitarist, and they have sooo much enthusiasm.

Punk Globe: Anything you’d like to add?

Olga: Yes, I just wanna say Thank you again to everyone for sticking by us over the past 25 and a half years! You lot are the greatest, cheers. Oh, and thank you to you too! for the interview!

Many thanks to Olga for taking time out to do the interview and many thanks also must go to Marnie for sorting it out for me. Nice one lads. Could this be the Toy Dolls last tour?!! If so where´s a UK promoter with the balls to put this band on?!! Anyway hope you enjoyed the interview and please do visit the Toy Dolls site. It´s well wicked.
