Tony West

From Blacklist Union

Interview By: Alison “MetalBabe” Cohen

Los Angeles hard rockers Blacklist Union are back with their 4th CD entitled 'Back To Momo!' Hailed worldwide as the next big rock band, Blacklist Union have 13 blistering tracks written by Tony West and Todd Youth, two of rock n' roll's most controversial outlaws in 2015. You are guaranteed inspiration with this brand of street rock with songs like "Alive N Well Smack in the Middle of Hell," "Superjaded," and "Evil Eye." I sat down with lead singer and founder Tony West to talk about all the exciting things that are going on with the band. Blacklist Union are clearly on their way from the street to the elite.

PUNK GLOBE:
Tell me about the first single, "Alive N Well Smack in the Middle of Hell," and the positive meaning behind the song.

Tony West:
I've been on the streets many years in this bullshit town, the city of Los Angeles. It's really about surviving and walking through the madness. You can really sustain or go throughout anything and be okay. I've been through a whole bunch of shit. I can't even believe I survived it, but here I am.

PUNK GLOBE:
You recorded a video for the song too. Can you tell me about that?

Tony West:
It was a really fun video. We had Janine Lindemulder in it. We had midgets in it too... Midgets jumping out of boxes.
"Midgets jumping out of boxes."

PUNK GLOBE:
How does the new CD 'Back to Momo,' compare to your other three records?

Tony West:
This record is as rock n' roll as it gets. I got to write this record with someone I grew up watching in punk rock bands and New York hardcore bands. (Todd Youth) I really respect him. He's a true soldier. We really had fun writing the record. This record was about letting go of pain and all the things that have tortured me my whole life. The other three records are very dark lyrically.

PUNK GLOBE:
What is it like working with Doug Goldstein and being signed to When Pigs Fly Entertainment?

Tony West:
I really like him genuinely as a person, and of course I have the utmost respect for him and what he's accomplished. I am really excited to start the train rolling.

PUNK GLOBE:
How does it feel knowing that Doug, who was the former manager of Guns N' Roses, has said that 'Back to Momo' is "The best record that he's heard since 'Appetite For Destruction' and that you are the hardest working frontman he knows?"

Tony West:
It's truly an honor. 'Appetite for Destruction' changed my life, and changed many other people's lives. That is the ultimate honor. He's like the modern day Peter Grant, and Peter Grant managed Led Zeppelin.

PUNK GLOBE:
Tell me about your Reputation.

Tony West:
I've said a million times, growing up, I was always drawn to rock music like Bowie, Iggy Pop, Bon Scott, and Robert Plant, and then later I really got into Scott Weiland, Layne Staley, and Axl. I just morphed into that. I've been through a lot of shit. All you can do basically is just laugh at a lot of it. I'm definitely not the same person I was when I was 25. This record is a lot about letting go. I'm not too concerned about people liking me. I like me, and my kids like me, and that's what's important. I didn't like me for a really long. But now things are different. I'm a big one to let the music do the talking. If people want to know what I think, it's all in the lyrics. I don't want to waste my time talking. I want to spend my time singing.

PUNK GLOBE:
What are your plans for Blacklist Union in 2015?

Tony West:
Blacklist Union plans to tour the world and make a lot of noise. We have a show booked in Seattle on April 4th, and are working on dates for Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and Dallas.

PUNK GLOBE:
Anything you would like to say to your fans?

Tony West:
Thank you for the support, and lookout for the new record.

PUNK GLOBE:
Great. Thanks Tony. I'm excited for everything happening with Blacklist Union in 2015!
