Celebrating peace, love and music may seem passé in the modern world, but not for this kid and not on this night. Paul McCartney brought together an arena full of like-minded musical lovers for a cross generational celebration of humanity. From the first chords of “Magical Mystery Tour” a new world opened up for us and all our worldly cares disappeared for the next couple of hours as we were transported to Macca. His is a land where all things are possible: peace, love, loss, heartbreak, “Live and Let Die” and 5 decades of material to draw from. If you have never seen Paul than I feel sorry for your unchecked box on your bucket list. Yes! This writer had a list with Beatle on it.
“Let Me Roll It” with "Foxy Lady” musical jam was mind blowing. After Paul finished fucking his amp, he casually walked up to the microphone and told the story of his friend Jimi playing Sgt. Peppers 2 days after its release. Hearing McCartney playing Jimi Hendrix was worth the admission price alone. “Paperback Writer” being played by a Beatle had me and the rest of the audience screaming for joy like teenage girls at a Beatles concert. I remember hearing a story where it was said that the scariest thing in the world is not an army, but a group of teenage girls wetting their pants while screaming at The Beatles and now I had joined the party.
Is seeing Paul like a greatest hits show? Hell yes! Because the majority of his songs are and the ones that are not are made out of pure POP pleasure. Celebrating his new life Paul played Valentine and dedicated it to his wife. “Maybe I’m Amazed”, Helter Skelter, Blackbird, Band on the Run” etc…..the songs just kept coming and we never wanted him to stop. When Paul pulled out “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" the arena was transformed into a kaleidoscope of psychedelia that left us tripping the lights fantastic. Paul never let’s us forget who his friends are for about midway through the set he paid tribute to John and George which included fabulous photos and lighting.
Seeing Paul McCartney is much like going to a family reunion and seeing relatives you never knew you had. I truly believe Paul’s fans are some of the greatest in rock for they all look out for each other and would give you whatever you need to stay on “The Long and Winding Road”. I first met professional photographer Keri Butcher in the world of Macca superfans and now here we are sharing the love with this review. Keri was working the camera down on the floor while I was in Pepper land, but that’s another story.
Nashville usually has an 11 pm curfew at the arena, but Paul played 8 encores which began with “Daytripper” and I believe we would all still be there now if we could. When the final chord was struck after “The End” it was time to go, but we really did enjoy the show. So readers if you get the chance to see Paul McCartney never mind about the price for I have never seen a U-Haul behind a hearse. It will be your “Ticket to Ride” to a place you will always remember.
