Punk Globe:
Thanks for agreeing to do an interview with Punk Globe... Can you give the readers some back ground on yourself?
Betty Moon:
Hi Punk Globe and readers of. Thanks for having me. I'm here to kick ass and take names.
Punk Globe:
At what age did you know you wanted to be a musician?
Betty Moon:
I was thirteen years old, had been studying ballet and wanted to becoming a singer and songwriter. I wrote and recorded my first song when I was 14.
Punk Globe:
Were you born in Toronto proper?
Betty Moon:
I was born and raised in the city of Toronto in a neighborhood called High Park which is in the west end of the city.
Punk Globe:
Do you remember the name of your first band?
Betty Moon:
My very first band was called Fandango, We put a bunch of names into a hat and pulled out the name Bambi. Our music was sort of gothish. We loved Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, AC/DC, Depeche Mode and the Sex Pistols. We thought we were an artsy electronic punk band. We had a large following in Canada and our cover version of David Essex's song "Rock On' became a hit. We did a number of tv appearances on Much Music, The New Music and performed mostly in nightclubs. It was a ton of fun.
Punk Globe:
Have you had any formal training?
Betty Moon:
After high school, I went to George Brown College in Toronto to study Theatre Arts for two years then a further two years at Humber College's jazz program. Humber is equivalent to Berkeley in Boston.
Punk Globe:
Have you ever played The Horseshoe? Have you played any venues in Hamilton?
Betty Moon:
I've played the Horseshoe in Toronto several times but haven't played in Hamilton. I would love to play a show there though.
Punk Globe:
Were you a fan of Teenage Head?
Betty Moon:
I knew of them, SNFU, Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, Fugazi, The Minutemen. I listened to so much music at the time... I liked it all. I didn't really get punk rock until I had a punk rock boyfriend in Toronto who turned me on to a lot of great and unusual punk bands. His name was Chris Bates. He was the original lead singer of G.O.D. A special and unique character he was. I could never stick to liking one type of music though and never wanted to be part of a tribe I suppose. I just wanted to have fun, dance and butterfly about. I loved art and fashion and wanted to try and change the face of both with my music and videos. I'm still working on it.
Punk Globe:
Who are your musical inspirations?
Betty Moon:
Growing up with a dad who loved music and played jazz, we attended a number of live concerts. My dad started me off with the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Surpremes and Santana. He was also into jazz bands including Coltrane, Chet Baker, Mongo Santamaria, Miles Davis and Chic Corea. He also loved Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick so I suppose I was raised with a solid foundation of musical talent.
Punk Globe:
Were you living in Toronto when you were signed to A&M?
Betty Moon:
Yes I was.
Punk Globe:
How many releases do you have out?
Betty Moon:
Amourphous is my 6th and I'm already in the making of my seventh CD here in Los Angeles.

Yes, from Bambi's Rock On CD to my current --- all are self-produced.
Punk Globe:
Any other artists that you have produced?
Betty Moon:
Yes I produced a band called Dovestar in Toronto in my basement studio. I also recorded and mixed their record.
Punk Globe:
I understand you have been nominated for various Casby awards.. Do tell us more?
Betty Moon:
I was nominated for 5 including Best New Artist, Best Video, Best Single of the Year and Best Album of the Year.
Punk Globe:
To add to your accomplishments you are also a filmmaker. Can you tell us about that?
Betty Moon:
As a teenager in Toronto, I grew up with a producer, who was studying at York Universitys film program and a Director who studied at Ryerson. We were all at school together and we did commercials and small films. We won several small awards for the commercials we did and I moved on to making videos for my songs. I currently have two television series in development of which I'm hoping to move forward.
Punk Globe:
Toronto's film festival and NXNW are very prestigious have you showcased any films at either of them?
Betty Moon:
No I have not, but I did showcase my Betty Moon band at NXNW in 1997 beside Tchort, Napalm Death, Machinehead and Kyuss.
Punk Globe:
