Punk Globe: Thanks so much for the interview Shira. Tell us how you met the fabulous Pauley Perrette?

Shira: I met Pauley through our mutual friend Lisa, who was in town staying at Pauley's house. We hit it off and had a lot of fun!

Punk Globe:  Tell us about your band Shiragirl. Are you centered in Los Angeles? How long have you been together for?

Shira: Shiragirl started when I made an electro-punk demo tape in London, while studying abroad. Over the years it progressed to an all girl punk rock powerhouse! Now we are based in LA, but we came up in Brooklyn, and I'm originally a Jersey girl.

Punk Globe:  Tell us who is in the band and what they play?

Shira:

  • Rainey P- drums
  • Constance Antoinette- guitar
  • Alex Windsor- bass
  • Shira- vocals

Punk Globe: Tell us how you came up with your band name Shiragirl?

Shira: It became my nickname in college!

Punk Globe:  Who are the bands influences?

Shira: Bikini Kill and riot grrrl culture, Peaches, Joan Jett, Rancid/Transplants, Sublime

Punk Globe:  I was very impressed with your website and your support to other female musicians.  Do you feel you are carrying on with the torch in the tradition of L7 and the other Riot Grrl bands?

Shira: We started Gritty In Pink to create a community of female musicians and play shows together. We were definitely inspired by L7, I actually met Jennifer Finch on the Warped Tour when her band The Shocker played the Shiragirl Stage, a stage we created for female-fronted bands in a male-dominated industry. We got to open for Donita Sparks once as well!

Punk Globe: I really enjoyed the live stream you had with my pal Suzi Moon.  Do you do this often?

Shira: Thank you! Love Suzi Moon. Gritty In Pink does livestreams about twice a month, interviewing female artists and fundraising for charities, with themed Instagram live shows.

Punk Globe:  you mentioned that your band and Suzi's band have toured together. Tell the readers about that.

Shira: Her first band Civet played my stage on Warped Tour 08. Then Turbulent Hearts played the stage in 2014 and 2018!

Punk Globe: Has Shiragirl played at Punk Rock Bowling?

Shira: We did play an unofficial show back in 2010!

Punk Globe: Does the band have any releases out?

Shira: Our last 2 EPs were produced by Tim Armstrong and out now, Andi Underground and Brooklyn Goes Hollywood. Our new single Antisocial Media will be out this summer!

Punk Globe: How about Videos?

Shira: We most recently did a video collab cover of Killing In The Name with Bodacious Thang. We have a new video coming out soon for our new single Antisocial Media! We also have several recent music videos and live videos out for Get Em Hot (featuring Angelo Moore from Fishbone), Summers Comin, I Must Be Dreamin, and Nothin to Lose and We Are The Underground. One of our first videos, Sick Day, is my favorite so far!

Punk Globe:  Pauley was telling me a bit about crashing the Warped tour. Do you care to elaborate?

Shira: Sure! We noticed there were no women playing instruments on stage at Warped, so we drove in our pink RV, set up across from the skate ramp and played. Kevin Lyman the founder walked up, and instead of getting kicked out, we got invited on the tour and welcomed back to host an all-female stage the next year! We hosted over 300 female-fronted bands and artists, including Joan Jett, and Paramore on their first ever tour.

Punk Globe: Do you have any web addresses you would like to share with the Punk Globe readers?

Shira: Our website is shiragirl.com, and you can find out more about Gritty In Pink at grittyinpink.co. On Instagram it's @shira_girl and @grittyinpinklife.

Punk Globe: Now that the country thanks to the Biden Administration is beginning to have some control of this horrible pandemic. What does the future hold for Gritty In Pink?

Shira: We are definitely going back to holding in-person shows soon! Very excited for that, and hopefully a tour in the future. We will also continue to build our online community with livestreams and a network we are creating for women in the music industry.

Punk Globe: Describe yourself in three words?

Shira: GRITTY IN PINK!

Punk Globe: Any final words for Punk Globe readers ?

Shira: Thank you so much for featuring us! Much respect.
