Bloodstone
Arrow Films/MVD
Blu-ray Review By: Jaime Pina

Bloodstone is a crazy 1988 Indian-American production starring Tamil cinema star Rajinikanth in his first English language film. Taking its inspiration from films like Romancing The Stone and Raiders Of The Lost Ark this action/adventure flick is quick moving and a lot of fun. Fans of goofy 80’s cinema who have not heard of it will enjoy its attitude, punchy synth soundtrack and the winning personality of its oddball star.

An American couple in India for business and pleasure and a streetwise taxi driver get caught up in the high profile theft of an ancient ruby. When the female is kidnapped over the ruby the taxi driver and the ex-cop husband form a partnership to get her back while avoiding giving up the ruby ransom. There are fight scenes and chase scenes a plenty and a lot of chuckles provided by Rajinikanth. He is extremely charming and while he may not be traditionally handsome and sports a little paunch, with his epic hair, eccentric physical mannerisms, quick wit and ultra cool swagger he really elevates the film’s fun level. American character actor Charlie Brill channels Peter Sellers from The Party as Inspector Ramesh. The action scenes are functional enough and the gorgeous scenery is a treat for the eyes.

The Blu-ray looks and sounds fantastic and the scene on the bridge at the waterfall gives the film an epic feel. This flick is by no means an original and the American leads aren’t the best actors but the film’s merits outweigh its flaws and makes for a diverting and fun view. The disc has plenty of extras including an interview with the co-writer, a video essay of star Rajinikanth and trailers.
