The Residents
The Third Reich N’ Roll
Ralph Records/Cherry Red/MVD
CD Review By: Jaime Pina

The Residents’ second album is a tribute to the glory of what top 40 radio used to be. It is a genius piece of work and some of it is astonishing in its originality and execution. Each side of the vinyl record was a single suite with the band presenting mosaics of memorable singles funneled through their own weird mentality. One rumor had it that the band recorded the snippets from the original tracks in the sequence they wanted and then rerecorded their own instruments and vocals over them and then stripped away the originals from underneath. This seems unlikely, as some of the reimagined songs are vastly different than the originals. Their reworking of songs like Psychotic Reaction and Hey Little Girl are exercises in heaviness while the mash-ups of Beatles and Stones and surf music staples are truly majestic. The album has an oddly hypnotic quality to it and is an unforgettable listening experience.

Disc one presents The Third Reich N’ Roll and also includes the bizarre Satisfaction/ Loser = Weed single and The Beatles Play The Residents and The Residents Play The Beatles. The disc closes with German Slide Music parts 1-6. These are unreleased instrumentals that are interesting and highly listenable.

Side two starts with an early 30-minute Residents live performance titled The Oh Mummy Show and the uninterrupted concert features the band playing to a backing track made up of bits and pieces of Satisfaction, The Third Reich N’ Roll and the unreleased Fingerprince. It must have been a sight to see and the 1976 audience seems receptive to something that was way ahead of its time. A show rehearsal of The Box Tops The Letter is included that was part of an ill-fated tour. Live versions of Satisfaction, Loser = Weed and Third Reich, a remix of Land Of 1,000 Dances by Scot Colburn are included as well as the DVD remix of Third Reich. For the truly hardcore are the Oh Mummy backing track and a fascinating Third Reich outtakes reel. The remastered tracks are fantastic with The Third Reich N’ Roll sounding as powerful as ever. The packaging is awesome to behold and the booklet is chockfull of art and information on this very special piece of work.
