Brian McGuire: Wunderkind Skater Filmmaker
New Film
“Sick of it All”
Review By: Janet E. Hammer

I have written articles about Brian McGuire before, I have known this ball of energy since he was in junior high school. He was from Texas, now he is there with you in L.A. and he is showing no signs of stopping. His new film “Sick of it All” is a wonderfully funny homage to the early films of such directors as Jim Jarmusch or David Lynch. I’m not saying it’s a rip off, far from it, it’s really good. It was at Raindance film festival in London in 2016, which has asked him back repeatedly over the years for numerous films. It winds film noir, with eighties independent film, with dark black comedy about the modern marriage and how fucked up they can be. It also intertwines the much loved childrens book “The Little Prince,” with the introduction of an amazing child actor Zion McGuire (I’m assuming he is either related to Brian his big brother Luke…most likely both.) He has continued with my favorite part of all his films, the use of prized actor Harry Dean Stanton. One of the best parts of this film conundrum is that to satisfy that urge to see what I am so pouring out like honey to you, it’s available to watch now at this link http://www.sickofitallthemovie.com/.

This film has so much on so many levels, it has the dry humor that most of us old farts love. It has the black humor that most people with a love of film (or British humor) will adore. It is a love/hate story of the modern married couple. It is a kidnapping story, always exciting with the thought that everything might go wrong. It has great story and comedy. The most important thing it has though is Brian McGuire, who is a true believer of the independent movie. He makes films the way he wants to. He is the Writer, Director and the Producer of this film. With Hollywood putting out terrible Rom/Com’s and Reboots of movies that weren’t that great to begin with, it’s nice to see someone write and make the film that they wanted to, just the way they wanted to. When you hear kids moan about what happened to films like “The King of Marvin Gardens,” or “Harold and Maude” it’s because people are so afraid to lose their asses they make whatever crap the studio’s hand them. So I highly recommend this film to all of you people who believe that making something on your own, and taking pride in it still matters. This is definitely that.
