Josie Cotton Video Review
Artist: JOSIE COTTON
Label: SCRUFFY RECORDS
Video: "MANEATERS (GET OFF THE ROAD)"
Director: Jonathan London
Video Add Date: September 4th, 2007
Hey there music video aficionados! It’s
Andy Gesner and my staff here at HIP Video Promo. When Johnny
Knoxville used “Johnny, Are You Queer?” in the second Jackass
movie, he gave himself a fitting theme song. He also reminded
everybody about one of the most consistently entertaining singers of
the American new wave: Josie Cotton, whose bratty insouciance and
sure hand with a melodic hook had no rival in the early Eighties.
Her performance in the iconic Valley Girl – she placed
three songs on the landmark soundtrack, including “Johnny,” “School
Is In,” and the propulsive “He Could Be The One” – epitomized
everything that was exciting about the era. But while Cotton is most
associated with the day-glo era, she’s been making fantastic music
ever since, and adapting her voice and her elastic songwriting to
suit contemporary styles and specific projects of her own choosing.
It may have taken a jackass to make that clear – but now Josie
Cotton is back squarely in the public eye, and indie music is much
better for it.
If you couldn’t tell from “Johnny, Are
You Queer?,” Josie Cotton is instinctively theatrical, and slips in
and out of characters’ voices effortlessly. Frightened By
Nightingales, her 1996 release, was an accomplished work of
art-rock: moody, gauzy, seductive, and miles removed from the
playful power-pop of her 1982 debut. Movie Disaster Music,
her widely-praised 2006 release, was another reinvention – one that
captured the sinister spirit of film-noir. Now, Josie Cotton has
returned with Invasion Of The B-Girls, a tribute to the
camp and cinema of the sixties and seventies. Inspired by John
Waters and Russ Meyer, Invasion Of The B-Girls, an album of
covers of B-movie theme songs (a truly unique and original concept),
contains a love song intended for Godzilla, and tales of bloodlust,
revenge, and clueless men getting their comeuppance at the hands of
lascivious women. “Maneaters (Get Off The Road)”, the first single,
is Cotton’s revisiting of She-Devils On Wheels, the 1968
B-movie classic about an all-female motorcycle gang that terrorizes
South Florida. Cotton delivers her narrative with verve and a
confrontational attitude: her love for her source material is
apparent, and she makes it infectious.
Josie Cotton’s singing voice hasn’t lost
any power over the years; if anything, she’s more energetic and
expressive now than she was during her reign as a new wave hit
maker. And as the clip for “Maneaters” proves, she looks as
fantastic now as she ever has. Cotton has always been an eyeful, and
her superb taste in vintage clothing and hairstyles distinguishes
her even among revivalists – she’s no casual cinema fan, she’s a
true believer who’s worked to get all the details right (her go-go
dancing is similarly impressive). The “Maneaters” video looks like a
B-movie; it’s Technicolor and over-the-top, delightfully garish and
surprisingly fashionable. Josie Cotton plays the leader of the
all-girl motorbike pack – one of her gang-members is L.A. punk-rock
legend- Ginger Coyote – and she rips up the road with glee. Flanked
by her lieutenants, she rides high on her chopper, challenging any
man to get in her way.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Video from the Faith No More Founder´s New Band - HARMFUL
-Bill and I have known each other for quite some time, and we´ve
actually tried to do stuff together, but it has never worked out, so
I´m very happy that I was able to shoot the video for Bill and the
HARMFUL guys. To me it was a creative break in the making of The
Sequential Art, and since I like to do things the complicated way, I
did two versions of the video, says the writer/director Espen
Jorgensen, who also shot the video. I feel in love with Elaine (the
song) - it´s very diverse, and I think that reflects in the video.
Most of the videos out there are so shallow, I wanted to do something
different, and risk falling on my ass to get there, and I think I did
ok, well, so I´m told.
-I am a big fan of Espen Jorgensen; he is extremely focused in
whatever he does, and I knew that it would be a productive
collaboration from the start. But I had no idea as to the depths of
his depravity until he brought out the mannequin, says Billy Gould.
See the video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_0yVawBcsk or
www.myspace.com/no_studio
Harmful´s latest album was produced by Billy Gould and released on his
label Koolarrow (www.koolarrow.com),
a label which focuses on foreign
bands who crosses the paths of rock, punk, metal and "folk".
No Studio produced the music video directed by Espen Jorgensen.
Jorgensen got a feature documentary in the making called The
Sequential Art, featuring amongst others Neil Gaiman, Daniel Clowes
and Will Eisner, who´s collectively done Stardust, Sandman, Ghost
World and Spirit. Jorgensen has earlier made music videoes for people
like Jimi Tenor, and got his productions shown all over the world.

YOUR DISCO NEEDS YOU!
This is your opportunity to buy Randy Jones' new CD
in pre-release. It is available as direct purchase
using PayPal, or buy going to
CDBaby.
NEWSFLASH: "Ticket to the World" is now available
at iTunes for instant digital download. Click here
to see:
The CD is essentially a double-album, with one
full-length album of pop greats, and one album of
remixes by some of the hottest new remixers like
Marcos Carnaval, FC Nond, and 2Fabu, as well as
established superstars like Man Parrish.
The CD explodes into life with “Your Disco Needs
You”, a track that has all the brashness, bravado,
and camp of the classic Village People hits braced
with the fervor of Broadway's “Les Miz”. Next up is
a fresh interpretation of the Saturday Night Fever
hit “If I Can’t Have You” blending audacious disco
horns with electronica elements.
Other tracks include the Monkee’s 60’s hit “I’m a
Believer” at a pulse-pounding 165 beats per minute,
concluding with a Hallelujah chorus worthy of a
Sunday morning in church with Elvis himself.
“Rhinestone Cowboy” is given a two-steppin'
chicken-fried, Country-House feel, complete with
fiddle and banjo. “New York City Boy” is in your
face with the brash, hairy-chested treatment,
complete with blazing NYC horns that the Pet Shop
Boys version lacked.
5 STARS CDBABY: "Retro Disco Fever! Randy Jones's
Ticket to the World is like going back into time and
reliving that marvelous, danceable, & fun disco
music era of my youth."

ROCKSTAR SUPERNOVA @ CITYWALK
Gene Simmons has a new reality show on the A&E network, and in the
very first episode,he has shaken up the world of punk rock. In the
first installment of his series,Gene introduces us to his son, Nick,
who has started a rock band. Gene has announced that the band will be
called Nick Simmons and the Electric Chairs.Gene goes on to state that
if the name isn't trademarked, it's fair game.
That may be so, but the name Electric Chairs has been in usage for
decades by Rhythm Tracking fave Jayne(the former Wayne) County, who has
toured internationally, and had records released internationally as
Wayne County & the Electric Chairs, going back to 1978, when the
single, F**k Off" helped launch the UK punk explosion.Trademark or
not,I'm aware that 'first useage" and "interstate commerce" are key
factors in this sort of dispute.
It's not as if Gene does not know who Wayne/Jayne County is; Kiss got
their big break/recording deal by being an opening act for Wayne
County at a legendary NYC loft concert,as Kiss aspired to join the in
crowd of the underground NY rock scene, of which the New York Dolls
and Wayne County were the leaders(at the time, the group name was
Wayne County & the Backstreet Boys, another name that was plucked from
County's grasp in 1995, and asn't properly pursued.)
Could it be possible that Gene, isolated from the 'street',living in a
big bucks, Top 40, ultra platinum universe, could not be aware that
Jayne is still active, performing and recording with the Electric
Chairs 'brand' in place?Jayne does not get radio airplay or big
spreads in Rolling Stone, but my efforts alone, as a fan and a friend,
have kept the banner flying for the likes of Wayne/ Jayne County,
Cherry Vanilla, the New York Dolls, all the Max's family.
This sort of thing also happened to the late, legendary Johnny
Thunders; after he left the New York Dolls, he formed the
Heartbreakers with fellow ex Doll Jerry Nolan and ex Television
member Richard Hell. The band made a major buzz happen in NYC and
London, and then Tom Petty, who'd been in a band called MudCrutch, came
along and decided that the Heartbreakers was a great name for a band.
This sort of thing can't be allowed, and this time around, I sense a
'grass roots' fight building(as when I took up County's defense when
the "Hedwig" play/movie hit the streets) over The Electric Chairs; at
the very least, Gene may have done Jayne County a very big favor by
the time that this is over(intentionally or unintentionally),as the
ensuing legal threats, 'cease and desist' actions, etc. will
certainly draw much more attention to Jayne County(millions of tv
viewers will probably find out about her for the first time) than any
attention being given to Nick's 'basement, rock star's son's" band.
So perhaps, when this all plays itself out, Jayne County will have to
send Gene a "thank you note"; perhaps Gene cooked this whole thing up
in the first place, as repayment for Kiss getting their initial deal
with Neil Bogert and Casablanca Records by serving as an opening act,
back in the day, for the ground breaking Wayne County.

a ruthie's inn reunion / documentary show is being
planned for September 23rd , two short months away. it will be called
remembering ruthies inn. we are currently lining up some of the bands that
played the venue plus a few newer bands. when all the bands have been
confirmed, hopefully by the end of this week, we will start an advertising
blitz. were estimating 8-10 bands total that will play. there will also be a
tattoo art show, foto and vintage flier gallery, and display boards
regarding ruthies inn history. everything will be filmed for the
documentary.
you are being invited to the ruthies inn profile so that you can receive
updates and help spread the word. if you have any memorabilia or anecdotes
you would like to share, please do so. if you had bad experiences, please
send what you can anyway. this will be a collective effort!
ruthie's inn was instrumental in supporting the east bay punk scene and
eventually spawned a thriving thrash/metal scene. many bands played their
first gigs at this venue and helped pave the way for an incredibly vibrant
community of social misfits and serious musicians who had something to say
-- a great venue that will go down in the annals punk and metal history.
please check back for updates or look out for bulletins with ruthie's in the
subject line and REPOST!
thank you in advance for your support.
