Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Arrow Films/MVD Blu-ray
Review By: Jaime Pina

Coming out of nowhere, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, produced, directed and created by the Chiodo Brothers effects geniuses was a real eye opener in many ways. It was a completely oddball and weird premise that worked against all odds. The comedy bits were sometimes as corny as the ones in Rock N’ Roll High School but as with that film, the corny jokes fit perfectly with the film’s off-kilter direction. And it also featured a theme song by legendary Los Angeles punk pioneers The Dickies and co-starred the great John Vernon from Animal House and Chained Heat. But still, for the whole thing not to fall apart, the Klowns had to work, and the Chiodo Brothers delivered unforgettable creatures that will remain iconic in the world of fantasy films.

In a tribute to The Blob, the film opens with an old farmer and his dog spotting a falling star and go to investigate, only to be victimized. The object from the sky is also spotted by a couple on lover’s lane. When they investigate as well, we see that the falling star is actually a circus tent space ship complete with a Forbidden Planet like power shaft, bodies encased in cotton candy and plenty of scary space clowns.

The klowns and corny jokes start to pile up and at the end it is clear that you have been completely entertained by something unlike anything else. The colors, the klowns, and the cotton candy all add up to cult film heaven. The film has been available in many editions on home video since its release but as with most Arrow releases, this will be the keeper. The transfer reveals some of the films low budget roots but it looks great with the crazy colors in the space tent popping vibrantly. Extras include making of documentaries, interviews with the Chiodos and a real treat in the form of a brand new visit with Leonard and Stan of the Dickies. Sadly, the elusive rock video for the Dickies’ Killer Klowns theme featuring exclusive material shot with the Dickies and the Klowns remains lost.
