Festival of Sins:
where the wicked never
rest!

With
the rise of burlesque and other risqué performance genres in the
public conscience a lot of thought has gone into the set up of the
Festival of Sins; one of London’s newer alternative events. Housed
at the Purple Turtle at Mornington Crescent, Camden, FoS is a
non-stop erotic cabaret of music, performance and art with broad
appeal across the city’s alternative groups.
Every
two months burlesque lovers, fetishists and varying alt music fans
mingle with new comers to all areas in a friendly, eclectic
celebration of wickedness. Each event is themed around one of the
deadly Sins with a bill of acts, entertainment, door gifts and even
themed cakes to match the sin of the month. On the night of Pride
for example arriving guests were given free gifts of glitter and
mirrors before seeing burlesque artist Crimson Skye do a dark but
sexy routine dressed as a partly completed plastic surgery patient!
Other
past spectacles have included a male burlesque artist with a flame
throwing penis, a gory magician and a Hong Kong whip tease giving
the audience an eye full while teaching guests in the front row a
lesson with her Cat o Nine Tails.

In
addition to performances there is a lot more to see and take in at
this event that sets it aside from its competitors. Walking around
the venue you can see and speak to some of the regular cast from the
Festival of Sins family, a selection of strange but approachable
characters who help the night happen. Having welcomed people on the
way in, resident stilt walking gimps mingle with the crowd before
displaying ornate body painting on each other later in the night.
Kinky, androgynous (and often feathered) presenter beN finds time to
potter about from group to group in between introducing the
entertainment and whipping the crowd into an excited frenzy over
whatever treat is to come next.

While
this is an event many people do dress up for the level of dressing
up is very much in the hands of the individual. Rubber clad vixens
mix happily with men in military uniforms and punks as well as those
in comfortable high street wear. The creators, Lust Reality, very
much encourage dressing to express your own personality or
creativity while embracing the night’s sin through your appearance.
If you get inspired while you’re there stall holders on the night
sell a variety of unique accessories, gifts and artwork.
The
Festival of Sins is a fast paced and inclusive event which
successfully blends the excitement and shock of tease and
performance with an evening of good music from bands and DJs Kate
Way and Guy Problem Being. Festival of Sins’ loyal following is
growing fast which can only mean good things for London’s
alternative community as its boundaries and expectations are pushed.
Come along and be part of something sinful and wicked!
