A Fish Called Wanda
Arrow Films/MVD
Blu-ray Review By: Jaime Pina

This just might have been the film that brought Monty Python into the mainstream even though it features only two Python members. While the Python’s films were always successful with their core fans in the US, this film really established John Cleese and Michael Palin as top comedic entities. For sure, the film is a great achievement earning 3 Oscar nominations with Kevin Kline winning for best supporting actor. Directed with great energy and expert comedic pacing by the then 78 year old Charles Crichton (Dead Of Night, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Battle Of The Sexes), it is a well-regarded classic comedy at this point and rightly deserving of a quality Blu-ray release.

Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween, Trading Places) plays Wanda, a woman who uses her sexy looks and seduction talents to work men for money deceiving them all the while. One of her schemes involves barrister Archie Leach (Cleese) who gets dragged into a tangled web of theft including Kevin Kline (The Big Chill, Silverado) and Palin. Character driven comedy mixes with tasteless humor from the British sensibility and Curtis, Cleese, Kline and Palin all give top shelf performances without stepping on each other.

Now A Fish Called Wanda gets the 4 star Arrow treatment with this excellent Blu-ray release. The film looks and sounds fantastic and included are two great making of documentaries, a commentary by Cleese and much more.
