The Brain From Planet Arous
The Film Detective/MVD
Blu-ray Review By: Jaime Pina

For some reason I have always taken this film very lightly and after seeing it on television as a kid and then acquiring a grey market VHS I never really bothered to revisit it. So when this came across my review desk I was looking forward to giving it a fresh view and was pleasantly surprised to find that not only does it hold up but is a really fun little flick.

Released in 1957 it had a lot in common with other exploitation fare of the era thematically and was made on a low budget as well. John Agar (Tarantula, The Mole People, Attack Of The Puppet People) stars a scientist who becomes possessed by an alien named Gor. He wants to take over the Earth but while inhabiting a human body learns about pleasures of the flesh and starts behaving in a randy manner towards Agar’s wife. Meanwhile, she has been contacted by another alien named Vol who is out to retrieve Gor and take him back to Planet Arous.

The alien effects are effective and Gor’s lascivious comments about being horny are pretty funny. Agar could always be trusted to give a good performance but he seems to really be having fun here. He wears contact lens that look awfully painful but is a real trooper in the scenes requiring them portraying Gor as a leering, sleazy ne’er do well.

This Blu-ray is a very nice package with the film viewable in widescreen or as it was originally intended. It looks and sounds very good. The extras include an introduction by star Joyce Meadows, commentary tracks by film historians, two featurettes and a booklet with photos and an essay.
