Switchblade Sisters
Arrow Films/MVD
Blu-ray Review By: Jaime Pina

Jack Hill is one of the world’s most underrated film directors. He has worked in many genres and would always hit homeruns. His film legacy includes horror (Blood Bath and Spider Baby), car racing (Pit Stop), women in prison (The Big Doll House and The Big Bird Cage), blaxploitation (Foxy Brown and Coffy), teen sex (The Swinging Cheerleaders) and gangs in what might be his one of his least known features.

Switchblade Sisters was one of Hill’s few films that did not resonate at the box-office even though it has grown over the years to be a cult favorite. It was rereleased theatrically in 1996 and given a DVD release. Now Arrow is releasing it on Blu-ray with some great extras.

The Dagger Debs are the female tagalongs of the Silver Daggers, the male gang at the local high school. A new girl appears at the school and runs afoul of the Debs only to earn their respect and she joins up. Soon the Debs leader becomes jealous of the attention she is getting and the influence she has and things start to go crazy. Included in the craziness is a shootout at a roller-rink and a meeting with female, black militants leading to a bloody street shootout.

The film is presented in high-def and the extras include a fantastic documentary on the film with Hill, cast members and others interviewed, footage from the film’s screening at the Grindhouse Film Festival, trailers and more. This release is a must have for fans of Hill and if you are a fan of exploitation at its best this is a title you cannot live without.
