RoboCop The Series
Liberation Hall/MVD
Blu-ray Review By: Jaime Pina

Produced for Canadian television in 1994 to capitalize on the release of RoboCop 3, the film failed at the box office and the show only lasted one season mostly due to budget issues. And like the third film in the franchise the series was toned down as far as violence and dark humor in order to appeal to young adults and children.

The box set contains all 22 episodes of the series including the two-hour pilot based on a discarded script for RoboCop 2 by the writers of the original film. The pilot features former Clear Light singer Cliff De Young (Shock Treatment, The Hunger, The Craft) as Dr. Cray Z. Mallardo and he would appear many times over the course of the series. Another excellent personality to appear on the show was former professional wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper (They Live, Hell Comes To Frogtown) as Tex Jones aka Commander Cash.

While the show does not quite capture the over-the-top brilliance of the first film, if you have kids and want to get them started on RoboCop without mentally scarring them with the first two films, this is a useful and fun way. While watching along, adults will get a kick out of guessing how Robo will thwart his targets without the lethal aggression that was his trademark.

The show looks and sounds great. RoboCop collectors will be happy with the sleek presentation with an episode guide on the inside cover. The plentiful extras include six featurettes, a photo gallery and a toy commercial! I still have my action figures from the series and was happy it was included.
